How to Order a VFD or Inverter Without Regret: A Buyer's 7-Step Checklist

If you're the person who gets asked to "order a drive" or "get us an inverter" and you don't live in the electrical world, this checklist is for you. Step 1: Determine Whether You Need a VFD, an Inverter, or a Generator

These terms get mixed up constantly, and they are not interchangeable.

A VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) controls motor speed by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor. If someone searches for "delta-vfd" or "delta drive vfd," they're typically looking for this—like the Delta C2000, MS300, or ME300 series.

An inverter converts DC to AC. The "inverter battery charger" combination comes up when people need backup power, solar storage, or off-grid capability. If the request mentions batteries, that's likely the category.

A generator produces AC power from fuel. An inverter generator uses inverter technology for cleaner, more stable output—the Champion 8750 inverter generator is a popular consumer example. But that's portable power, not an industrial motor control device.

The "inverter vs generator" question comes up when someone isn't sure whether they need continuous power conversion or occasional backup power. Completely different products, completely different use cases.

So step one is not about specs. It's about asking the requester: What is this equipment going to power? A motor? A battery bank? A power tool? If they can't answer, get an engineer involved before you spend money.

Step 2: Get the Exact Model Code

In 2022, a maintenance lead asked me to "order another Delta drive like last time." I searched, found something similar, and ordered it. It was an MS300 when they'd needed a C2000. Different wiring, different configuration, different application. The return cost us $87 and two weeks of downtime.

  • EMC filters for facilities with strict electromagnetic interference requirements
  • Remote keypads and cables when the drive is installed inside a panel
  • Input reactors for sites with unstable power supplies

Same logic applies to inverter battery charger purchases. A charger for lead-acid batteries is not the same as one for lithium. They operate at different voltage profiles and use different charging algorithms. If you order the wrong type, the battery won't charge correctly—or worse, it could be a fire hazard.

During our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I found that about 15% of our electrical returns were for missing peripherals, not defective products. People ordered the drive, got it, and then discovered they needed a filter or a reactor. Then they paid rush shipping for the second order. Step 7: Inspect Everything When It Arrives

The purchase isn't complete when the boxes show up. Two things I always do—and I recommend you do too:

Second, file the manual and register the warranty. The manual that ships with the drive includes wiring diagrams and fault codes your maintenance team will need the first time something goes wrong. Common Mistakes Worth Avoiding

Don't assume the request has all the details. "We need an inverter" might mean a battery charger, a solar inverter, or a generator. Asking one direct question costs nothing. Returning the wrong $900 item costs plenty.

Don't skip the compatibility check. A well-built VFD like a Delta drive will work with a wide range of motors—but you still need to verify voltage, current, and control type. Skip the check and you'll be shipping it back at your own cost.

That's the whole process. Seven steps, 30 minutes of work, zero guesswork. It won't make you an electrical engineer. But it will stop you from being the person who ordered the wrong drive and shut down a production line over a $500 mistake.
