I've been handling drive and motor-control orders for a small OEM for seven years. I've personally made six significant buying mistakes, totaling roughly $14,000 in wasted budget. Now I keep a checklist so the newer buyers on our team don't repeat them. If you're ordering a Delta VFD-EL, this is the process I use before I send a purchase order (PO).
Use this checklist if your job is motor speed control: pumps, fans, conveyors, machine tools. If you're actually shopping for power generation — say you found an 'inverter generator sale' and you're wondering whether a Champion 3100 watt inverter generator covers your job site — this is the wrong category. A VFD is not a generator. Before you go further, make sure you're comparing the right products.

Short version: it's for anyone who needs to buy a Delta VFD-EL to control a three-phase induction motor. I'm not going to write a textbook. I'm going to walk through the six checks I run every time. Check five is the one most people skip.
1. Understand the difference between an inverter and a generator
This sounds basic, but the keyword 'inverter' causes real mix-ups. A variable frequency drive — including the Delta VFD-EL — is sometimes called an inverter because it uses an inverter stage to change DC back to adjustable-frequency AC. It controls the speed of a motor. It does not create electricity.
A generator creates electricity from fuel. An inverter generator, like the Champion 3100 watt inverter generator, uses an electronic inverter to produce cleaner, more stable output for sensitive equipment. It's a portable power source. So if you need backup power or off-grid power, you want a generator, not a VFD.
If you search for 'inverter generator sale' because you have a tool trailer or a work site with no utility power, stop here. The Delta VFD-EL will not solve that problem. If you need to run a pump at different speeds, keep reading.
2. Match the drive to the motor nameplate
Most buyers focus on horsepower and price, and completely miss full-load current. The motor's nameplate tells you voltage, phase, frequency, FLA, and sometimes insulation class. The VFD's output current needs to handle the motor at all speeds and loads.
As a rule of thumb, look for a drive whose continuous output current is at least the motor's full-load amps. Same horsepower is usually okay—or rather, okay as a starting point, not a guarantee. If the motor is in a hot area or has a long cable run, you may need to step up a size. The Delta VFD-EL manual has selection tables; use them.
In my first year, I skipped the FLA check because I was in a hurry. That's how you end up with a 5 HP drive on a 5 HP motor that draws more than the drive can handle. It trips on overcurrent at the worst possible moment.
3. Verify the input voltage and phase before you talk to Delta VFD sales
This is where I made my most expensive mistake. In 2021, I ordered several 460V drives for a plant expansion. When they arrived, the line at the installation point was 230V, and the motors were wired for 230V. I had read the dual-voltage motor nameplate wrong. The drives showed undervoltage on startup.
Check the line-to-line voltage at the actual installation point. Also check whether the supply is single-phase or three-phase. The Delta VFD-EL series includes different voltage classes and input configurations. The model code tells you, but you have to feed it the right information first.
When you call Delta VFD sales, give them: input voltage, phase, frequency, motor FLA, motor voltage, and the application. Then ask the sales rep to confirm the model code. Not a series name. The full model code. That simple call is a no-brainer, and it's the easiest way to avoid a two-week delay.
I still kick myself for not verifying the voltage on that order. If I'd made one phone call, I'd have saved about $5,600 in shipping, restocking fees, and a lot of embarrassment.
According to the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), motor circuit conductors, overcurrent protection, and grounding need to be sized per the nameplate and installation conditions. That's not a VFD-specific requirement, but it matters when you're choosing input wiring and fuses. Verify current code requirements with a local inspector if you're not sure.
4. Look at the control wiring plan before placing the order
I've also ordered a drive without checking how we were going to tell it to start and stop. That happened because I was focused only on power terminals. Now I download the Delta VFD-EL manual before I buy and look at the control terminals.
Will you use a two-wire start/stop or three-wire control? Is the speed reference 0-10 VDC or 4-20 mA? Are the digital inputs sink or source? What are the relay output ratings if you're planning to signal a PLC or pilot light?
These details don't change the price much, but they decide whether the drive works in your machine. If you need 4-20 mA from a pressure transmitter, make sure your selected VFD-EL model has that analog input and that the terminal settings are configured for it. A lot of drives have the physical pin but the default setting is different.
According to Delta's published VFD-EL documentation, control terminals are grouped by input power, motor, and control signals. You can't rely on terminal numbers alone; verify your exact model.
5. Check ambient temperature, enclosure, and mounting space
Here's the step most people ignore: heat. A VFD wastes some energy as heat, and the rated current is usually based on a maximum ambient temperature — often around 40°C or 50°C. If you hide the drive in a sealed fiberglass cabinet next to a hot process line, you can derate it and still trip on overtemp.
Before the PO, ask: Where will this drive actually live? Is it indoors or outdoors? Dusty? Washdown? IP20 is fine for a clean indoor panel, but not inside a food processing area without additional protection. And the drive needs breathing space. Mounting two drives side by side with no gap can cut into their cooling performance.
I want to say the VFD-EL manual lists maximum ambient temperature at 50°C for some models, but don't quote me on that—check your exact datasheet. The point is the rating exists and it matters. I remember one install where a 7.5 kW drive shut down every afternoon in July. The drive wasn't faulty. The panel was too small and the sun was heating the wall behind it. We moved the panel, and the problem disappeared. That cost us a service call. The next time, we checked the panel location before ordering.
6. Plan for setup, spare parts, and documentation
The last check is easy to rush. But there are three things I order or prepare with every VFD-EL now:
- Parameter quick-start guide: Write down the motor nameplate values and the basic control settings. I use the VFD-EL manual's parameter ID list. This saves a lot of confusion on commissioning day.
- Braking resistor if the load needs quick stops or is vertical. If you're not sure whether the application needs one, tell your Delta VFD sales rep. Waiting until after the machine crashes is not the right time to learn.
- Input fuses and a spare cooling fan if the model has one. Small parts, but they can shut you down for days.
Also save your configured parameters to a file or a keypad if your model supports it. A VFD that loses its settings can turn a five-minute restart into an afternoon of re-entering numbers from scribbles.
Bottom line
Every expensive mistake I've made came from ordering too early. The drive itself was usually fine. My process was the problem.
So the checklist, in the order I run it:
- Is this product a VFD or a generator? If you need a generator, buy a generator.
- Does the VFD output current match the motor FLA?
- What is the actual input voltage and phase at the site?
- What is the control wiring plan?
- What are the ambient and enclosure conditions?
- What spares, setup tools, and documentation are needed?
